You’ve seen people with dogs, cats, or even parrots—but a pet elephant? That’s next-level extraordinary. Meet Moyo, a three-day-old baby elephant whose life took a miraculous turn thanks to the courage and compassion of one extraordinary woman.
It all began on the shores of Lake Kariba, Zimbabwe, where little Moyo, separated from his herd, was barely clinging to life. At just a few days old, weighing a mere 56 kg (African elephant calves are usually 90–100 kg!), he was fragile, scared, and suffering from trauma that could have ended his life.
nter Roxy Danckwerts, founder of the animal sanctuary Wild Is Life. Upon discovering the abandoned baby, Roxy didn’t hesitate. She fed him 18 liters of specialized formula every day, nursed him back to health, and even slept beside him. It didn’t take long before an unbreakable bond formed—Moyo saw Roxy not just as a caretaker, but as a second mother.
Today, Moyo is 5 years old, growing fast and still inseparable from Roxy. He follows her everywhere, raids the kitchen for peanuts, brownies, and silverware, and even hogs the sofa! Despite having the entire wildlife sanctuary at his disposal, Moyo seems perfectly happy living life inside the house with his beloved human mom.
The road wasn’t easy. Moyo carried trauma from nearly drowning in a river during his first days of life. But after 15 months of careful therapy, guided by Roxy and the dedicated team at Wild Is Life, he overcame his fear of swimming.

This story isn’t just about a baby elephant—it’s about the transformative power of love, compassion, and patience. Moyo’s life is a testament to what humans can do when they put their hearts into saving animals in need.
